I used mainly 2 software (on Windows 7):
- BMFont: BMFont - AngelCode.com
- Hiero: libgdx
And the format I used is .fnt+.png (the fnt is plain text, and the png is an image), not sure if that’s the one you wanted.

And here is a nice and free ttf font that you can use for tests if you want (put the font size to 8px when converting to bitmap fontfor best results): Press Start 2P | dafont.com
