i feel like the character are a bit too removed from the background, maybe try sharing their colors a bit more, and only using an outside outline.

hey Ethan,
the characters at the right have nothing to do with the game, they are actually from a cyberpunk pack of assets I did a while back. Just put it there for fun XD.
