First-ish Pixel Art Attempt (Criticism Wanted!)

Recently, I wanted to create a sprite from scratch and wanted to get opinions from others on how I did? I’ve never really did pixel art, but love games like OMORI, classic Pokemon, Undertale, etc. Right side is the “base” I made for my character and I plan on using it to make more characters. Left side is my finished/designed character.

I finished OMORI recently so I looked off those sprite sheets and took inspiration on how they designed their characters.

I’m taking all criticism! Please give tips, tricks, and maybe some tutorials on how to better my craft!

My criticism? Personally, I’d suggest making the shades more pronounced via hue shifting. When making a color brighter, shift its hue towards yellow, but when making it darker, shift it towards purple.

Also, using just 2 or 3 versions of one color looks better for the art. For a character with 4 main tones (skin, hair, shirt, pants) It’d probably round out to around 10 or so colors in total.

And also, while a personal preference, not every color needs an outline border between them. For example, I’d suggest removing the border between the sweatshirt and the jeans, the sweatshirt and the hands, and the jeans and the shoes.

Anyways, an example of this in action- (Keep in mind I’m not the best at drawing hair yet.
