Imported images turn into background layer, messes it up when turn into normal layer

So I’m tryna import a sonic sprite sheet but whenever I do it automatically turns into a background layer. So when I go to delete the stuff around it it turns black not transparent. But when I change it to a normal layer it turns some of the color turns white and messes it up. I looked for a short while for an answer and I could not find one that fixed it. If anyone knows a solution please help! Thanks.

Oh and I’m using the steam version on pc.

hi there, i bet you’re in indexed color mode, which confuses a lot of people.

i think for now the easiest thing to do would be: 1) open the file and go to sprite → color mode and select rgb 2) convert background layer to regular layer.
after that you should be able to do any editing without issues.
also, don’t forget to save the sprite as aseprite file first and only then export it as the image format you need.
