Selection tool regression?

Hi so i saw something about this like 2 years ago while looking this up but it was fixed then and i havent had this problem until today. When using the selection tool when i click outside of the selection to deselect it instead selects a single pixel and adds it to the selection, as though i were holding shift. i am aware of the command D use to bypass this, it is just kinda annoying to deal with. i am on macbook m3 pro on the newest update for it, and this occurred randomly today before i even updated too which is why i am confused. i have tried restarting and relaunching and then even updating to the newest mac version but the problem still persists. maybe i am missing a solution or something, but this bug came out of nowhere, or maybe i clicked something that toggled it which is a possibility too? thanks

Hi,

I think you might just have the wrong mode selected.

In the toolbar, on the far left, there should be three symbols when you have the selection tool active:

If you select the first symbol, it will replace your current selection with the new selection. Ie., when you just click outside, it will deselect what you had selected before.
