I am still unfortunately only doing what amounts to fanart and drawing via reference, but I think I get the gist
What do I do to improve?

It’s great to see the lighting and shapes, but the pixel art version could benefit from better contrast and sharpness to make certain elements stand out. The house and monster should be the focus of attention and as such should be the darkest things in the picture.
One other thing to realize is that the vector drawing has ribbon-like qualities due to the placement of sharp angles.

You sure? I kinda thought it was at the middle, as such couldn’t be that dark compared to the trees closest to the screen
